Paste your text, press Start and click into your document. Ghostkeys types it into Google Docs one key at a time, at a speed range you pick, with slips that get fixed, pauses between sentences, and your bold, italics, underline and paragraph gaps kept.

Why Google Docs ignores ordinary auto typers

On an ordinary web form, a typing tool can fill a box by setting its contents, or by firing keyboard events from a script. Google Docs has no ordinary box to fill. It draws the document itself and listens for typing in a hidden input frame, then turns each key press it receives into an edit.

Key events made by a script are marked as untrusted: the browser doesn't type a character for them, and Google Docs ignores them. That's why simulated typing that works on a web form does nothing in a Google Doc.

Trusted keystrokes, on Pro and up

Ghostkeys sends each key through Chrome's built-in debugging interface, the same channel developer tools use to drive a page. Every letter arrives as a complete key press (key down, character, key up), the same sequence your keyboard produces, and Chrome treats it as real input. Google Docs takes it like any other typing.

  • In a Google Doc, Ghostkeys always types this way. Elsewhere, the Real keystrokes switch (on by default) does the same for canvas editors and other picky sites.
  • While it types, Chrome shows a bar saying Ghostkeys is debugging the browser. That's the permission trusted keystrokes use.
  • The first few letters and the first Enter double as a check that each key landed exactly once. If Docs took one twice, Ghostkeys deletes the extra and corrects for it for the rest of the run.
  • Click out of the document and typing pauses until you click back in.
  • Every typo, synonym swap, retyped word and AI draft is deleted and replaced as it goes, so the finished text is the text you pasted (apart from Docs' own autocorrect, below).

The formatting it keeps

Copy from another Google Doc, Word, Notion, ChatGPT or a web page and press Paste in Ghostkeys: the styles come along. Turn Keep formatting off to type everything as plain text.

Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough

Switched on and off with Docs' own shortcuts as it types (Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U, or ⌘ on a Mac), starting from what the Docs toolbar shows at your cursor.

Paragraph gaps

Auto adds a blank line wherever the copied text shows a gap, since ChatGPT, web pages and Word space paragraphs with margins rather than blank lines. Only real blank lines keeps exactly what was copied. Always one blank line puts one between every two paragraphs.

Real paragraphs

Each new line is typed with the Enter key, so the document gets real paragraphs rather than one long block.

Not recreated: headings, bullets and numbering, links, fonts, sizes and colors. Their words come through as plain paragraphs in the style at your cursor.

How to set it up in Google Docs

  1. Install and sign in

Add Ghostkeys to Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc, open it from the toolbar and sign in with your Ghostkeys account. Google Docs needs Pro, Max or Lifetime.
  2. Paste your text

Copy the text, then press Paste in Ghostkeys. Check the Paragraph gaps setting matches what you want.
  3. Choose how it types

Set a speed range, a typo rate and the human rhythm options. Leave Real keystrokes and Keep formatting on. Every setting is explained in the how-to guide.
  4. Press Start, then click into the doc

Click where the text should go before the countdown ends (3 seconds by default, up to 15). If you aren't in the document yet, Ghostkeys waits until you click in.
  5. Watch it type

A small pill in the bottom-right corner of the page shows progress. Stop any time with its ✕, the Stop button in Ghostkeys, or Alt+Shift+S.

Tips for a clean result

  • Google Docs' own automatic changes apply to typed text just as they do to yours: smart quotes, automatic lists, capitalization and substitutions. For an exact copy, turn them off under Tools → Preferences in Docs.
  • Idle breaks stop for 15 seconds to 4 minutes now and then, like someone stepping away. Set Idle breaks to Off to type straight through.
  • If letters come out doubled, set Input method to Text insert, or Key press, de-duped.
  • Docs tabs that were open before you installed Ghostkeys work without a refresh.
